To Sorrento and in the surrounding countries there is an ancient custom: the Sunday of the Palms all, great and tiny, they bring to not only bless on the church square of the Churches you copper of ulivo but also palms of sugared almonds because it is narrated…
… It was far a morning of the April 1551 and the Sorrentinis they were busy in their daily activities, when the bells of he/she asked her some Peninsula they started to play signal of danger to hammer. A lot of boats of Turks are been sighted that sailed toward the coast… You fear was as much even if the sorrentinis had gotten used to the raids of the Saracens and you/they had predisposed some towers of sighting and built boundaries strengthened for defending himself/herself/themselves. In that occasion fortune was from the part of Sorrento: it got up a strong wind, the sea became agitatissimo… the ships were sunk. Only a young slave saved him from that shipwreck. You/he/she was found on the beach by a fisherman that it conducted her/it in the church where he was celebrating the mass on the occasion of Sunday of the Palms. She threw to the feet of the altar and to thank offered in gift a pouch that contained some sugared almonds. To that time the sugared almonds were not known in Peninsula for which you/they aroused the curiosity of everybody. They was distributed to the presents and since then the young Saracen became the teacher that taught whether to prepare the palms of sugared almonds.
